“Lagos takes radical action against the use of polystyrene for a cleaner environment”

In a statement signed by Kunle Adeshina, Director of Public Affairs of the ministry, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced a new initiative to combat the use of polystyrene containers in Lagos.

Law enforcement officers from LAGESC/KAI, Environmental Health Officers, LAWMA, Police and the Ministry will track down anyone who has polystyrene products in their shops, stores or outlets, and confiscate them.

Wahab pointed out that the use of polystyrene has caused enough damage to the health of residents and the state of the environment for many years. He added that the government was determined to encourage viable alternatives for polystyrene containers across the metropolis.

The Commissioner reiterated that cleanliness is an essential prerequisite and that market leaders must ensure that a clean environment remains a top priority at all times.

He also expressed concern over the unsanitary habits seen in most of the markets, which recently led to the closure of some markets across the state. He stressed that the government took no pleasure in closing businesses, but that it became necessary due to the lackadaisical attitude of the leaders of certain markets.

Wahab urged traders to stop selling on railways and roads, and to stop leaving waste in markets. He also highlighted the importance of segregating waste in the respective markets, packaging waste and engaging waste collection operators.

Finally, he announced the upcoming inauguration of the Red rail line, which is expected to operate from evening to morning, providing a new transportation option for Lagos residents.

This new regulation aims to improve the quality of life of Lagos residents by creating a safer and cleaner environment, while encouraging more sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices.
