“African Union mini-summit: Angolan President’s crucial call for direct dialogue between Rwanda and the DRC”

The mini-summit held in Addis Ababa during the thirty-seventh conference of heads of state and government of the African Union was marked by a proposal from Angolan President João Lourenço. He pleaded for a direct dialogue between the Presidents of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with the aim of resolving the conflict raging between these two nations.

João Lourenço’s mediation aims to relaunch the peace process, seriously compromised by the recent violence in eastern DRC. The main objective is to achieve a ceasefire between the Congolese armed forces and the M23 rebel group, while launching direct talks between the Congolese and Rwandan leaders.

During discussions held behind closed doors, President Félix Tshisekedi insisted on the need for the unconditional withdrawal of M23 members from Congolese territory, denouncing the aggression suffered by his country. For its part, the Rwandan delegation denied any responsibility for the security crisis in the DRC.

Due to the continuing differences, the work of the mini-summit was suspended, with a resumption planned for the following day. President Lourenço underlined the importance of resuming a constructive dialogue to obtain a ceasefire and facilitate direct exchanges between the authorities of the two countries.

This direct dialogue between the presidents of Rwanda and the DRC, initiated during this African Union conference, could mark a significant step forward towards resolving the conflict and maintaining peace in the region.
