In the complex and shifting world of African diplomacy, recent allegations involving the involvement of Ugandan soldiers alongside M23 rebels in Rutshuru territory, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, have sparked a wave of speculation and disinformation. The Ugandan Embassy in Kinshasa has vigorously rejected these unfounded claims, emphasizing the absolute respect for the borders and territorial integrity of the DRC by the Ugandan armed forces.
According to Ambassador Matata Twaha, a.i. charge d’affaires, these accusations are based on unverified sources from a so-called “Youth Council of the Territory of Rutshuru” whose credibility remains uncertain. Additionally, the use of photographs dating back to the UPDF’s deployment to the East African Community Regional Force to support these allegations has been described as manipulative and unprofessional.
Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability in the Great Lakes region, highlighting its participation in peacekeeping operations in Africa. The UPDF is recognized as a professional force, always acting in coordination with the Congolese government in any cross-border initiative.
These false allegations, like those of September 2023 concerning the Busanza border, were denounced as being a maneuver aimed at sowing discord between the Congolese and Ugandan populations. The embassy urged caution in handling such information, encouraging people to turn to official sources for reliable data.
In addition, the Ugandan Embassy reiterated its unwavering support for the fight against armed groups in the DRC, testifying to its active collaboration in the joint operation against the ADF in North Kivu. This cooperation resulted in the repatriation of fifty former ADF rebels, following a deradicalization process, a tangible sign of Uganda’s commitment to regional security.
Finally, the embassy reaffirmed its desire to maintain an open dialogue and close collaboration with the Congolese authorities, with the aim of strengthening bilateral relations and contributing to the construction of a peaceful and prosperous future for the two countries.
