European Union invests additional 165 million euros in energy in Nigeria to boost sustainable development

The European Union (EU) continues to invest in Nigeria’s energy sector, with an additional €165 million planned for new projects. This is in addition to the 200 million euros in subsidies already invested in the sector since 2008.

During a visit to the Minister of Energy, Adebayo Adelabu, the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, indicated that this financial contribution would notably support projects of small hydroelectric plants and solar energy for establishments health. The government will also implement rural electrification projects with isolated and interconnected mini-grids, as well as a circular economy.

The minister was also invited to the upcoming inauguration of two projects financed by the EU and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

Reacting to the announcement, Minister Adelabu expressed his appreciation to the EU for its continued support to the energy sector. He stressed that additional efforts are needed to address the significant challenges facing the sector. He notably mentioned the issue of liquidity as being the main problem on which the government is actively working.

The minister stressed that the establishment of a tariff reflecting real costs is essential to ensure the viability and efficiency of the energy market. He welcomed the EU programs in the energy sector and confirmed their alignment with the ministry’s strategy.

These EU investments reinforce Nigeria’s efforts to improve access to clean and reliable energy, aligning its objectives with those of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. This will help stimulate the economic and social development of the country, particularly in rural areas which are often the most marginalized in terms of access to energy.

This collaboration between the EU and Nigeria demonstrates the importance of strengthening international partnerships to address common challenges such as access to energy, the fight against climate change and the promotion of sustainable development.

In a context where energy resources are increasingly limited and environmental impacts are becoming increasingly concerning, these initiatives will help ensure a cleaner and more sustainable energy future for Nigeria and the world.
