The tragic accident that occurred yesterday evening in the Mediterranean province of Alexandria, Egypt, left at least 15 people dead, authorities said. A truck crashed into several passenger vehicles in Amreya district, west of the city.
According to the police report, the truck hit four minibuses, commonly used in Egypt as a means of public transportation. One of the minibuses overturned and another caught fire. Eight people were also injured in the accident.
Ambulances were quickly dispatched to the scene of the accident and transported the injured to area hospitals. Road accidents unfortunately claim many lives each year in Egypt, where road safety often leaves much to be desired. Speeding, poor road conditions and poor enforcement of traffic rules are often the causes of these accidents.
Last October, a passenger bus collided head-on with a parked vehicle on a highway linking Alexandria to the capital, Cairo, killing at least 32 people.
These tragic accidents are a reminder of the importance of road safety and strict enforcement of traffic rules. Egyptian authorities must redouble their efforts to improve road infrastructure and strengthen controls to prevent such tragedies in the future.
In the meantime, our thoughts are with the families of the victims and those injured in this accident. We hope that the authorities will take the necessary measures to prevent such accidents from happening again in the future.
