Aston Barrett: the legendary bassist of the Wailers
The music world is mourning the loss of a true reggae icon: Aston Barrett. Born in 1946, he recently bowed out on February 3. This talented musician is known for being the bassist for the Wailers, the iconic group that accompanied Bob Marley. But his contribution goes far beyond his role within the group, as Aston Barrett also played a major role in the development of reggae in Africa.
One of the most notable moments of his career was his collaboration with Alpha Blondy, a very famous Ivorian artist. Their collaboration resulted in an iconic song, “Jerusalem”, recorded in 1986. Aston Barrett brought all his expertise to this song, with his brother Carlton on drums. Alpha Blondy emphasizes that it is thanks to them that African reggae was officially recognized. Their collaboration helped spread the magic and unique resonance of reggae music in Africa.
Aston Barrett’s connection to Africa goes back to the very roots of the reggae movement. Rastafarianism, to which he was deeply attached, is linked to the Emperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie. Bob Marley and the Wailers, of which Aston Barrett was a member, were always focused on Africa and sought to promote unity on the continent. In 1977, the cover of the Wailers’ album “Survival” was a collage of the flags of African countries, with the title “Africa Unite” in the foreground.
The link between Aston Barrett and Africa has also been made possible by memorable concerts on the continent. In December 1979, the Wailers performed in Gabon, then returned in April 1980 for a historic performance in Zimbabwe, marking the independence of Southern Rhodesia. Aston Barrett, through his powerful and emotional bass, contributed to the emancipation of Africa and brought his unique vibration to these historic moments.
Alpha Blondy, deeply touched by the disappearance of Aston Barrett, paid him a vibrant tribute: “My brother Family Man, mission accomplished. You have made millions of men happy, only God can thank you. Rest in peace.” It’s a moving testimony that reflects the impact Aston Barrett has had on the music scene and on the hearts of fans around the world.
Aston Barrett will forever remain in our minds as a reggae legend, a talented and committed musician, who left an indelible mark on African music and reggae as a whole. His legacy will live on and inspire future generations to follow in his footsteps, spreading love, unity and the vibration of reggae across the world. Aston Barrett, rest in peace.
