Uncontrolled urbanization and climate change: the flooding of the Congo River strips Kinshasa

Growing urbanization and climate change are major issues affecting many cities around the world. Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, is unfortunately no exception. The Congo River, which crosses the city, experienced a devastating flood in December 2023, causing significant human and environmental damage.

The photographic exhibition entitled “Uncontrolled urbanization and climate change: the flooding of the Congo River strips Kinshasa”, presented at the National Museum of the DRC, offers a poignant look at the consequences of this disaster. The photographs captured by Olivier Muamba, head of the Multimedia desk at ACTUALITE.CD, vividly illustrate the devastation caused by the flooding of the river: lives lost, homes submerged, roads destroyed, agricultural land flooded… A real tragedy which bears witness to the urgency of acting on the effects of climate change.

This exhibition, designed by Patient Ligodi, publishing director of ACTUALITE.CD, goes beyond the simple presentation of images. It is also intended to be a call to action, a platform for awareness and debate. During various panels, experts and speakers were able to discuss the current and future challenges of the urbanization of Kinshasa as well as the crucial role of the media in understanding and communicating urban climate issues.

The flooding of the Congo River in Kinshasa is a glaring example of the consequences of uncontrolled urbanization and climate change. The images captured by Olivier Muamba and exhibited at the National Museum of the DRC are visual testimonies of the urgency of rethinking our lifestyles and our actions in favor of the environment. This traveling exhibition plans to tour universities and cultural centers throughout 2024, thus offering an opportunity to raise awareness and raise awareness of these major challenges.
