“Tensions in Kinshasa: MONUSCO under attack in the DRC”

“Outbreak of violence in Kinshasa: MONUSCO targeted”

The situation is serious in Kinshasa. The head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), Bintou Keita, spoke out strongly following a series of attacks targeting MONUSCO personnel on Saturday, February 10. Vehicles belonging to the UN mission were set on fire, creating a climate of tension and insecurity.

In a post published on his official X account, Bintou Keita categorically condemned these acts of violence. She stressed that “weakening MONUSCO means strengthening the negative forces that it is fighting alongside its Congolese partners, the FARDC and the PNC.” It is essential to understand that the presence of MONUSCO in the DRC aims to support the country in its fight against armed groups and to promote stability and peace.

These attacks occurred during a demonstration on Boulevard du 30 Juin in Gombe, a commune in Kinshasa which is home to several institutions and embassies. The demonstrators accused some Western countries of supporting Rwanda, which they consider an aggressor of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Tensions quickly escalated, with attacks on MONUSCO vehicles and certain foreign embassies. The authorities managed to disperse the demonstrators, but they promised to start again next Monday. This worrying situation reflects the persistent instability in the region and the challenges that MONUSCO faces on a daily basis.

It is crucial to emphasize that the presence of MONUSCO in the DRC is essential for the stability of the country and the well-being of its population. This UN mission works in close collaboration with Congolese security forces to fight against armed groups and protect civilians.

It is imperative that the Congolese authorities take measures to ensure the safety of MONUSCO personnel and to prevent such attacks in the future. Political and social actors must also work together to find peaceful solutions to the problems fueling tensions in the region.

The international community must also continue to support MONUSCO in its efforts to stabilize the DRC. By strengthening the UN mission, providing logistical support and actively engaging in conflict resolution, we can hope to improve the situation and build a peaceful future for the Congolese people.

The path to peace and stability in the DRC is strewn with pitfalls, but it is essential not to give up. With political will, strengthened international cooperation and strong community engagement, we can hope for a better future for the DRC. MONUSCO will continue to play its role, but it needs everyone’s support to successfully accomplish its mission.
