The Lagos Marathon, one of the city’s most important sporting events, is gearing up to welcome thousands of runners and spectators. However, to ensure the safety of all participants and guarantee the smooth running of the race, some roads will be temporarily closed to vehicle traffic.
The Commissioner for Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, announced that several roads would be affected by these temporary closures. These include Funsho Williams Avenue from Stadium to Surulere, Ikorodu road to Anthony, Gbagada to Third Mainland Bridge, as well as Dolphin Road to Alfred Rewane Road and Falomo roundabout to ‘at Bourdillon Road. The Third Mainland Bridge and Lekki Bridge will also be closed for both entry and exit.
In order to minimize inconvenience for motorists, alternative routes have been proposed. It is therefore possible to take the Apongbon bridge towards the Eko bridge via Costain Roundabout, or to take the Iponri and Bode Thomas road to reach your destination. Another option is to use the Eko Bridge towards Costain Roundabout and Apapa Road to access Oyingbo/Jebba and then continue on Herbert Macaulay Road. For those wishing to cross the Third Mainland Bridge, an alternative route will need to be planned as it will be closed from midnight until the end of the marathon.
The presence of officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be increased at diversion points to ensure the flow of traffic and the safety of motorists.
In any case, Commissioner Osiyemi advises motorists who do not have urgent matters along the diversion routes to avoid them as much as possible. This will help minimize traffic jams and complications related to the closure of these roads for the duration of the marathon.
So, whether you are runners, spectators or motorists, it is important to take these temporary closures into account when planning your travel during the Lagos Marathon. By following the proposed alternative routes and respecting the safety instructions, you will contribute to the success of this major sporting event in the city.
