Reconquest of Bunagana: A priority for national security
In the North Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the city of Bunagana has been under the occupation of M23 rebels, supported by the Rwandan army, for 600 days. This situation has caused frustration and impatience among the Congolese with the authorities’ response to this occupation.
During an event organized by citizen movements to commemorate this long occupation, participants underlined the importance of addressing security issues as a priority during this new legislature. They call on decision-makers to take steps to stop the occupation and restore security to the region.
Faced with this anger and impatience, Patrick Muyaya, government spokesperson, wanted to reassure the population by affirming that no centimeter of national territory will be ceded to other countries. He stressed that the situation presents a threat to the survival of Rwanda, whose economic model is based on the looting of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. He also stressed that measures have been taken to contain these lootings and that the war waged by the rebels is a response to these actions.
However, Patrick Muyaya recognizes the challenges facing the Congolese army and assures that processes are in place to restore peace in the region. He understands the impatience and suffering of the Congolese, particularly those who have not been able to exercise their right to vote, and undertakes to do everything possible to bring peace to each part of the national territory.
Fighting between M23 rebels and the Congolese armed forces has intensified in recent weeks, particularly in Masisi territory. These clashes led the rebels to advance in certain areas, thus creating psychosis in the city of Goma.
The fall of Bunagana in June 2022 into rebel hands was a moment of total confusion. Despite the efforts of the Congolese army to repel the advance of the rebels, the city was conquered, highlighting the challenges facing the Congolese armed forces in this border region with Rwanda and Uganda.
The reconquest of Bunagana and the restoration of security in the North Kivu region are therefore priorities to ensure stability and peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Let us hope that decision-makers will take the necessary measures to address the concerns of the population and guarantee a peaceful future for all Congolese.
