Chishuru, a London restaurant that promotes African cuisine

Chishuru’s story began a few years ago, when Joké won a local cooking competition. Building on this victory, she opened her first restaurant in Brixton Village in 2020. Joké’s journey into the world of cooking began during her college days in Nigeria, where she ran a food cart. Arriving in the UK in the 1990s, she worked for a property management company before starting her own cooking club. Today, she prides herself on offering Chishuru guests a fine dining experience that showcases the richness of African flavors.
Chishuru’s menu offers a variety of West African and internationally inspired dishes. Iconic dishes such as jollof rice with fried plantains sit alongside fancier dishes such as moi moi, pepper soup and Newlyn cod with tomatoes, Scotch bonnet pepper and okra. Guests also have the option to enjoy a £75 tasting menu, which offers a true symphony of flavors.
Chishuru’s recognition was not long in coming and the restaurant won several awards. One of the highlights was Joké’s victory in the cooking competition, which left her speechless. “I am speechless, which is rarely the case,” she said in reaction to this well-deserved recognition.
