The Benue University (BSU) teachers’ strike has resumed, following unmet demands from the university management. The strike was endorsed by the National University Teaching Staff Union (ASUU) and will last until their demands are heard.
ASUU listed its key demands including the implementation and payment of arrears of the batches of 2021, 2022 and 2023, as well as annual increment steps. They also demand the payment of salary arrears for April 2023, the correction of salary discrepancies for the staff of the College of Health Sciences, the payment of the Merited Academic Allowance (EAA) and various compensations. In addition, they demand the accession and implementation of the National Health Insurance Scheme, among other points.
ASUU said the university management is refusing to address their concerns regarding staff welfare, despite several discussions. They particularly highlight an agreement reached in January 2023 between the Benue government, the university management, the board of directors and the ASUU-BSU. This agreement provided for increased funding for the university to address promotion and annual increment issues, with the aim of establishing industrial harmony. According to ASUU, the state government has fulfilled its part of the agreement by providing additional funds to the university, but the BSU management is refusing to pay staff dues.
In December 2023, ASUU had already had a dispute with the university management for withholding November salaries, due to refusal to submit 2020/2021 examination results.
This resumption of strike marks a new period of uncertainty for students and staff of the University of Benue. The question of financing and salary demands remains at the heart of the conflict. Many are hoping for a quick settlement that will allow a normal resumption of academic activities. In the meantime, the consequences of this strike are being felt, with disruptions to schedules and growing frustration among students and staff. It is essential that all stakeholders work together to find a lasting solution and restore stability within the university.
