The Pact for a Congo Found: a political earthquake within the Sacred Union

The launch on Wednesday January 24 of the political platform “Pacte pour un Congo Rétuvé” (PCR) created a real earthquake within the Sacred Union, the vast political formation which supported the re-election of Félix Tshisekedi in the presidential election of December 20 last year.

Since the announcement of the creation of this new political formation, the headquarters of the political parties members of the Sacred Union have expressed their discontent, affirming that the PCR was born from the frustrations of the allies of the UDPS after the latter had rounded up the majority of seats in the National Assembly.

Vital Kamerhe, Tonny Kanku, Jean Lucien Bussa and Julien Paluku, the main actors of this new political platform, justify its creation by emphasizing the need to strengthen cohesion around President Tshisekedi.

However, some analysts close to the UDPS believe that these members of the PCR would have difficulty accepting that the UDPS occupies the first place among the political forces, particularly with regard to the appointment of a new Prime Minister and the formation of the next government.

Despite the tensions within the Sacred Union, Augustin Kabuya, secretary general of the UDPS, affirms that this initiative does not affect the Sacred Union and that all Congolese are free to think. It is obvious that the PCR is made up of different political groups and aims to support President Tshisekedi in accomplishing his mission of rebuilding the Congo.

This launch of the Pact for a Congo Found (PCR) within the Sacred Union is therefore a strong signal, testifying to the political tensions in the country and the desire of the different parties to preserve their interests. The rest of the events will allow us to see what impact this new political platform will have on the Congolese political landscape and on President Tshisekedi’s development projects.
