Afenifere reorganizes its structure and calls for urgent reform for security and governance in Nigeria

Afenifere, one of the oldest socio-political groups in southwest Nigeria, recently announced the elimination of some of its key positions as part of its restructuring process. This decision was revealed in a communiqué issued after the general meeting of the organization held in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Wednesday, January 24, 2023.

Under the interim leadership of Ayo Adebanjo, Afenifere has decided to restructure its roles and responsibilities in order to reposition and rejuvenate its structure. The positions of Acting Chief and Deputy Chief were therefore officially repealed.

According to the statement, the responsibilities and authority of advising Afenifere will now be vested in the Afenifere Elders Caucus, comprising 21 distinguished members.

Reuben Fasoranti was appointed Chairman of the Elders Caucus, accompanied by prominent members such as Olu Falae, C O Adebayo, Femi Okunrounmu, Seinde Arogbofa, Kofo Bucknor Akerele, Ayo Ladigbolu, Alani Akinrinade, Olu Bajowa, Bolaji Akinyemi, Banji Akintoye and S A J Ibikunle .

The Afenifere statement also expressed solidarity with the affected communities, extending condolences to residents of Oyo State following an explosion and residents of Plateau following bandit attacks.

The organization stressed the urgency of reviewing the country’s security architecture to ensure the safety and freedom of Nigerians. Afenifere recommended empowering states and local councils to establish their own police services, arguing that such measures could significantly reduce cases of kidnapping and banditry plaguing the country.

Afenifere also called for a comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria and urged President Bola Tinubu to quickly begin the process.

In conclusion, Afenifere’s recent decision to restructure its key positions reflects the group’s desire to reinvent itself and adapt to current challenges. By expressing solidarity with affected communities and calling for security and governance reform in Nigeria, Afenifere shows its commitment to the well-being of the nation.
