The process of physical verification of employees in local government units has recently been in the news in Enugu State. Under the supervision of Professor Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary of State to the Government, this audit aims to ensure workers’ compliance with established rules and to combat the presence of “ghost workers” in the payroll.
During a surprise visit to Enugu North council area, Prof. Onyia stressed the importance of knowing the status and identity of employees in each ward, as well as identifying those who illegitimately slipped into the list of local government salaries. He also expressed concern over employees who are absent or negligent in their official duties, stressing that it is unfair to use taxpayers’ money to pay non-existent or uncommitted employees.
The verification team carefully reviews employee employment letters, schedules and biometrics to ensure they match the information provided during the online verification process. This step aims to ensure that the individuals physically present match the recorded data.
The Secretary of State also stressed that the local government system must no longer be used as a means for influential people to corrupt the system. He vowed to overhaul this system and make it more productive, aligned with Governor Peter Mbah’s plan to increase the state’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
This verification exercise will be carried out in all 17 districts of the state, while the state team will continue to monitor the process and take appropriate action against those who have not been verified. The objective is to guarantee a more transparent and efficient local administration.
