Article: “Sudan plunged into a political impasse: No negotiated solution in sight”
In Sudan, the country is now entering the 9th month of war with no political solution in sight. The government announced that it would not participate in the extraordinary IGAD summit scheduled for January 18.
According to local media Sudan Tribune, the Foreign Ministry cited the need for a one-on-one meeting between the warring generals before initiating broader discussions with the regional bloc.
This conflict has already killed more than 12,000 people and displaced millions of people, leaving them without prospects for the future.
Habab remembers the day the conflict broke out: “At the time the war broke out, we were busy studying for exams that were scheduled after the end of Ramadan. But like many other plans we had, the war disrupted everything.”
The UN humanitarian chief said on January 4 that almost 25 million people in Sudan will need humanitarian aid in 2024.
In December, more than 500,000 people fled their homes in southern Sudan’s Jazeera province following the capture of the state capital by RSF fighters.
The WHO estimates that one in seven children under the age of five suffers from acute malnutrition.
In December, rival commanders El Burhan and Hemedti agreed to meet face-to-face under the auspices of IGAD. However, this meeting was reportedly canceled when RSF General Hemedti withdrew.
According to the current chairman of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), quoted by the Agenzia Nova news agency, Uganda will host the summit which is expected to address the ongoing crisis between Ethiopia and Somalia, as well as the war in Sudan.
This new article mentions the permanence of the critical situation in Sudan, where the conflict continues without prospect of political resolution. The country’s government has decided not to participate in a regional summit, citing the need for direct talks between the warring generals. Meanwhile, the population suffers increasingly, with millions displaced and a growing number of children suffering from malnutrition. The situation is worrying and requires urgent intervention by the international community to try to find a solution to this destructive conflict.
