“Withdrawal of MONUSCO in the DRC: A decisive step towards the sovereignty and stability of the country”

Current events in the Democratic Republic of Congo are marked by an important subject: the gradual withdrawal of the United Nations Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO). The Congolese government has developed a joint disengagement plan to ensure a security transition when the peacekeepers leave.

In a meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of Foreign Affairs and La Francophonie, Christophe Lutundula, presented the broad outlines of this plan. It emphasizes priority actions to be carried out, such as strengthening the army and police, managing community conflicts and continuing political processes.

The MONUSCO withdrawal process was launched in March 2018, with a planned date of 2024. However, the Congolese government has requested an accelerated withdrawal at the end of this year. The gradual disengagement plan was signed in November 2023 and endorsed by the Security Council in December. It provides for a reduction in MONUSCO personnel from July 2024.

The withdrawal of MONUSCO constitutes a crucial step towards the lasting sovereignty and stability of the DRC. It will enable the government to take charge of the country’s security and implement policies aimed at promoting peace and development.

This MONUSCO withdrawal process has already started on the ground, with the closure of camps in certain localities, such as Kamanyola in South Kivu and Lubero in the North Kivu province.

In conclusion, the withdrawal of MONUSCO in the DRC marks a new stage in the history of the country. The Congolese government is actively preparing to assume this responsibility and ensure the security and development of the nation. The gradual disengagement plan will strengthen the sovereignty and stability of the country, thus paving the way for a better future for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
