The following article is additional information on the measure announced by the North Kivu Provincial Security Committee in Goma, aimed at prohibiting the circulation of motorcycles beyond 6 p.m.
According to the spokesperson for the military governor, Lieutenant-Colonel Ndjike Kaiko, this decision was taken because of the numerous victims caused by armed groups using motorcycles to carry out their criminal acts. This measure therefore aims to strengthen the safety of the population by limiting travel in the evening. It was also announced that currency traders will also have to cease their activities from 6 p.m.
In order to guarantee the application of this measure, the provincial security committee plans to open additional police stations and calls on the population to cooperate with the police.
This initiative follows a series of violent incidents in Goma, where civilians were killed and injured by armed bandits operating on motorcycles, particularly in the Mugunga district.
It should be noted that an order from the governor of North Kivu will have to be published soon to formalize these security measures.
This decision underlines the growing importance of securing cities and populations, in the face of threats from armed groups. It aims to establish a climate of trust and tranquility for the inhabitants of Goma.
