Title: Liberation of journalists and technicians of the community radio from Mangina to Beni by the army: a victory for press freedom
Introduction :
Freedom of the press is an essential pillar of any democratic society. Unfortunately, many countries continue to restrict this freedom and harass journalists who dare to overcome obstacles to inform the public. However, there are also times when justice prevails and imprisoned journalists are released. This is the recent case of journalists and technicians from the Mangina community radio in the Beni territory, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, who were released by the army after an advocacy campaign led by the NGO Journalists in Danger ( JED). This event is a victory for press freedom and a step forward towards a more open and democratic media environment.
The context of the arrest:
On Saturday January 6, journalists Chukurani Maghetse and Yves Romaric Baraka, as well as technicians Sharo mbonga and Glades kiro, were arrested by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC). The authorities accused them of having relayed messages from a provincial deputy from North Kivu, containing remarks inciting hatred towards the FARDC and in favor of Mai-Mai fighters. These accusations led to their incarceration in the military intelligence dungeon of the Sokola 1 operational sector of the FARDC in Beni.
The intervention of Journalists in Danger (JED):
Faced with this worrying situation, the NGO Journalists in Danger (JED) immediately took measures to defend the rights of imprisoned journalists. Thanks to their advocacy and the pressure exerted on the authorities, JED obtained the release of the journalists and technicians of the Mangina community radio. This victory demonstrates the importance of collective action and the vital role of human rights organizations in ensuring a free and independent press.
A step forward for press freedom:
The release of these journalists and technicians is a significant step towards greater press freedom in the DRC. This sends a strong message to government authorities about the importance of respecting the fundamental rights of journalists and preserving the independence of the media. By allowing dissenting voices to be heard, civil society and press freedom advocates contribute to a more open, democratic and transparent media environment.
Conclusion :
The release of journalists and technicians from Mangina community radio is a victory for press freedom in the DRC. This shows that the commitment, advocacy and solidarity of human rights defenders can make a difference and secure the release of unjustly imprisoned journalists.. However, it is essential to continue to support and protect journalists who risk their lives to report the news in difficult contexts. Press freedom is a fundamental value that must be defended everywhere, because it is essential to a democratic and open society.
