“Deadly attack in the west of the DRC: experts and politicians are mobilizing to guarantee the safety of the populations”

Mobondo militiamen recently carried out a deadly attack in the village of Mbuntie, located along the Kwango River. Available information indicates several deaths, fires in homes and schools. This attack caused residents to flee to other areas deemed more secure.

The security situation in this part of the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) raises many concerns. Bagata National MP-elect Garry Sakata points out that the Mobondo militiamen pose a real threat, not only to Mbuntie village, but also to other territories such as Bagata. He therefore calls for the strengthening of security measures in this region.

This militia has been active for several months in the former Bandundu province, where soldiers from the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) have been deployed. This situation raises questions about the effectiveness of the measures taken to stem the violence and protect civilian populations.

To analyze in more depth the security situation in this part of western DRC, we invited several experts. National deputy Willy Bolio, elected from Bolobo in the province of Maindombe, will provide his insight as a political representative. Professor Lapika Diomfumu, anthropologist, and Me Jean-Marie Kabengela, researcher at the Human Sciences Research Center (CASH) and lawyer at the International Criminal Court (ICC), will provide their academic and legal analyses. Finally, Ntumba Ciabola Bintu, national deputy and executive of the Udps, will share his point of view as a member of a political party.

It is essential to understand the different aspects of this complex situation and to find effective solutions to ensure the security and protection of populations in this region of the DRC. Cooperation between political actors, experts and civil society will play a crucial role in developing these solutions.
