The political situation in Benin: Rejection of the amnesty proposal for political opponents, tensions intensify

The political situation in Benin is once again in the spotlight, as the National Assembly’s law committee rejected a proposed special amnesty law in favor of opposition figures in exile or in prison, including Joël Aïvo, a professor and opposition leader.

Joël Aïvo’s lawyer, lawyer Fatiou Ousman, reacted to this rejection by emphasizing that it was not surprising, but still expressing his regrets. According to him, the key to this political negotiation lies in the hands of the country’s president, Patrice Talon. He believes that only the latter can appease the country by accepting an amnesty law.

Maître Fatiou Ousman also emphasizes that pressure from the Beninese is crucial in this negotiation process. He recalls that during the events of 2019, President Talon managed to negotiate an amnesty through a law, and he believes that other Beninese should be able to ask for the same thing in order to once again appease the country.

It should be noted that Joël Aïvo is currently serving a 10-year sentence for charges of conspiracy against state authority and money laundering.

This rejection of the proposed special amnesty law for opponents in exile or in prison provokes reactions and calls into question political freedom in Benin. The situation remains tense, and it will be interesting to see how it develops in the coming months.

In conclusion, the question of amnesty for political opponents in Benin continues to divide opinions. While the National Assembly’s Law Committee rejected the special law proposal, eyes are now turning to President Talon to find a solution to this political crisis.
