“Devastating floods in the DRC: local agriculture in danger”

Devastating floods are affecting many regions across the world, causing significant material losses and having a direct impact on the lives of local populations. This reality is unfortunately no exception in the valleys of the Nkokozi and Nvuazi rivers, in the Boko and Kwilu Ngongo sectors, located in the territory of Mbanza Ngungu, in the province of Kongo Central, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The people of this region are heavily dependent on agriculture, notably growing cassava, corn, peanuts, bananas and various vegetables. Unfortunately, floods destroyed these valuable crops, leading to a difficult situation for the local population.

Victor Nzuzi Mbembbe, a development actor in the region, testifies to the disastrous consequences of these floods on local agriculture. He emphasizes that the results of this agricultural year will be very difficult to harvest due to the damage caused to the crops. Indeed, the destruction of cuttings and seeds has led to a shortage of these essential resources, which has led to an increase in the prices of agricultural products in the region.

This situation highlights the importance of adequate management of risks linked to climatic phenomena, such as flooding. It is crucial to put in place prevention and risk reduction measures, as well as adaptation strategies to protect vulnerable farming communities.

In conclusion, floods have a devastating impact on agriculture and the daily lives of people in the Nkokozi and Nvuazi river valleys. It is necessary to take measures to mitigate the effects of flooding and prevent such disasters in the future, in order to ensure food security and well-being of affected communities.
