Sanction of cheating candidates in elections in the DRC: a strong signal for democracy

In a recent press release, the NGO Voiceless (VSV) expressed its satisfaction with the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) to sanction candidates alleged to have cheated during the legislative and provincial elections. and local events which took place on December 20 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

According to Rostin Manketa, Executive Director of the VSV, this decision by the CENI constitutes a strong signal in favor of democracy in the country. He welcomed the fact that the CENI followed the recommendations made by numerous electoral observers, including those deployed by the VSV.

The VSV believes that the Congolese population deserves to be represented by people legitimately elected to Parliament and provincial assemblies. She therefore congratulated the CENI for having taken measures against all candidates suspected of cheating, including those from the ruling party.

However, the VSV also emphasizes that these alleged cheating candidates should resign from their positions in order to allow the Congolese justice system to conduct a thorough investigation and take the necessary measures. Although benefiting from the presumption of innocence, their resignation would promote impartial work of justice and preserve the credibility of the elections.

This position taken by the VSV highlights the importance of guaranteeing the integrity of electoral processes in a country where democracy is still under construction. By sanctioning candidates suspected of cheating, the CENI sends a clear message: cheating will not be tolerated and those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.

This decision by the CENI therefore represents a significant step towards the consolidation of democracy in the DRC. It demonstrates the desire of electoral authorities to enforce the rules of the democratic game and to guarantee free and fair elections.

The VSV thus encourages the Congolese population to remain vigilant and to continue to support efforts aimed at consolidating democracy in the country. Because, beyond these sanctions, it is the democratic future of the DRC that is at stake.
