Oscar Pistorius, famous double amputee Olympic runner, will be released from prison on parole this Friday, more than ten years after killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, an act that shocked the world.
The South African Department of Correctional Services approved Pistorius’ application for parole on November 24, 2023.
Aged 37, he will not be allowed to leave the Pretoria region without permission from the authorities.
Pistorius shot Steenkamp several times through the bathroom door of his house on Valentine’s Day 2013.
He was ultimately convicted of murder and sentenced to 13 years and 5 months in prison, and has been incarcerated since late 2014.
Themba Masango, director of Not In My Name International, an advocacy group against gender-based violence and social injustices, said he hoped Pistorius could be rehabilitated: “Under South African law, Oscar Pistorius has been charged, he was tried and was incarcerated Now, like any other inmate, he is eligible for parole and he is receiving it. I think that’s what we call justice, it’s retributive justice. , and we also believe in rehabilitative justice.”

Another condition of his parole will force him to follow a program to manage his anger problems as well as another program on violence against women.
Pistorius’ sentence will end on December 5, 2029.
