“Governor Dave Umahi pledges to complete Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway despite financial challenges”

The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway is a major construction project in Nigeria. Ebonyi State Governor, Dave Umahi, recently expressed his commitment to completing this highway by the end of 2024, despite the financial challenges facing the project.

Umahi said in a meeting with all directors of the ministry in charge of the project that all obstacles would be overcome to ensure the completion of this crucial infrastructure project for Nigerians. However, the contractors demanded a revaluation of the cost of the project from N1.35 trillion to be financed.

With funding being a major issue, Umahi pointed out that the project was funded by the Presidential Development Fund, which comes from embezzled funds. He discussed with the country’s president the importance of this highway for all users, but the government does not have the means to meet the demand of entrepreneurs.

Umahi stressed the need to review the designs and cost of the remaining section of the highway and expressed his commitment to complete this project, even if solutions must be found to circumvent budgetary constraints.

The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway Reconstruction Project is currently being managed by Julius Berger Company and is divided into three sections. It was awarded in December 2018.

Regarding non-performing contractors, Umahi announced that the government would review all contracts that are not being seriously implemented. The costs, scope and technical aspects of the contracts will be re-evaluated by the end of January.

Umahi also stressed that the ministry has sufficient financial resources to carry out its operations. If allocated the N892 billion budget, he pledges that every penny will be used transparently and efficiently by December 2024.

This highway project is of paramount importance to the economic and social development of Nigeria. Its completion would facilitate travel between different cities, stimulate trade and strengthen national connectivity. By overcoming financial challenges and committing to meeting deadlines, the Nigerian government is demonstrating its commitment to promoting sustainable development and infrastructure improvement for the benefit of the people.
