Compensation for victims of illicit activities in Uganda: A step towards justice and reparation

The Special Reparations Fund for Compensation to Victims of Illicit Activities in Uganda (FRIVAO) recently launched the process of compensating victims in Kisangani. This first wave of 114 identified and certified victims was supported in opening their bank accounts with a local bank.

François Mwarabu Ngalema, National Coordinator of FRIVAO, assured that compensation payment operations would continue in accordance with the recommendations of the International Court of Justice. This announcement was welcomed with satisfaction by Mamy Utshudi, president of the victims, who stressed that this compensation marked the end of a 23-year struggle.

Victims continue to register with FRIVAO coordination and follow established procedures. The fund plans to continue payments for five years and also envisages the construction of infrastructure in the public interest, in order to immortalize this event for future generations.
