Rise in corn prices in Kananga following bad weather
The town of Kananga, capital of Kasai-Central, is currently experiencing a significant increase in the prices of corn, a staple food in the region. Indeed, the price of a scoop of around 3 kg has increased from 6,500 FC to 9,500, or even 10,000 FC since Thursday December 28, 2023.
This price increase is attributed to the situation of transport infrastructure in the area. Indeed, following the heavy rains which hit the province on December 26, the railway linking Kananga to Mweka was seriously damaged in several places. In addition, the Tshibashi bridge, essential to connect Kananga to Demba territory, was also affected by the floods. These major disruptions in communication routes have made travel by vehicle, train or other motorized means extremely difficult or even impossible.
Traders claim that these transport problems have led to fluctuations in the prices of food crops, particularly corn, on the Kananga markets. In the absence of a regular supply and constant demand, prices have naturally risen, thus putting in difficulty the local population who largely depend on maize for their food subsistence.
Faced with this situation, it is essential to put in place emergency measures to ensure an adequate supply of corn and stabilize prices on the Kananga markets. Alternative transport solutions must be considered to circumvent current obstacles and allow traders to transport essential food products to the city.
In addition, it is crucial to put in place strategies to support local agriculture in order to encourage corn production in the region. This would reduce dependence on imports and guarantee a sufficient supply of corn at affordable prices for the population of Kananga.
In conclusion, the increase in maize prices in Kananga is directly linked to transport problems caused by recent bad weather. It is necessary to take rapid and effective measures to ensure a regular supply of maize and stabilize prices in order to preserve the food security of the inhabitants of Kananga.
