The death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Nigeria is a huge loss to the country. This courageous and intrepid man dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and the defense of the essential values for a fair and secure society. His departure leaves a void that is difficult to fill, as he was a respected leader and a fervent defender of the Nigerian people.
Rotimi Akeredolu was much more than a governor, he was a brother, a confidant and a political companion. His voice was loud and powerful, and he did not hesitate to stand up against injustice in all its forms. His remarkable career as a lawyer, former Attorney General of Ondo State, President of the Nigerian Bar Association and Governor of Ondo State are testament to this.
In a context marked by the security challenges weighing on Nigeria, Rotimi Akeredolu stood out for his vision and his incessant advocacy for a reform of the country’s security architecture. His determination played a key role in the creation of the local police force in the southwest of the country, with the aim of guaranteeing greater security for citizens.
Rotimi Akeredolu’s contribution is not limited to his actions as governor. His legacy is reflected in the miles of roads, numerous schools and health facilities he established in Ondo State. He demonstrated exemplary leadership, particularly during the tragedy of June 5, 2022, where 40 faithful of the Catholic Church in Owo lost their lives. In this dark time, Rotimi was a guide for his people, accompanying them with compassion and determination.
My personal journey with Rotimi Akeredolu began as members of the same progressive political family. Together, we fought to restore progressive governance in the South-West of the country, as well as in Edo States and Nigeria as a whole. His courage and commitment was evident during our legal battles to recover stolen money orders in Ekiti, Ondo, Edo and Osun States.
Today we mourn the loss of a fighter, a fearless defender of truth and social justice. Rotimi played his role brilliantly and is leaving us prematurely. My condolences go out to his wife, Betty, and Actor Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa. Governor Akeredolu was not only a friend, ally and associate, he was a brother and soul mate. His passing is a blow to our APC party and to the progressive family as a whole, we are diminished by this loss.
In this time of mourning, I hope that Governor Aiyedatiwa remains faithful to the vision of governance left by this great political leader. It is important to continue working towards a more just and secure society, honoring the legacy left by the late Rotimi Akeredolu.
