Socio-economic activities resumed their normal course this Wednesday, December 27 at the Butembo shopping center, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo. After partial paralysis observed early in the morning, the situation returned to normal.
This paralysis was caused by a demonstration by motorcycle taxi drivers in reaction to the sabotage of a taxiing robot the day before by young people affiliated with the pressure group “Veranda Mutsanga”. This robot, which had recently been installed to improve traffic flow in downtown Butembo, was damaged by these acts of vandalism.
Roads were blocked and car tires were set on fire by protesters. The mayor of Butembo, Principal Superior Commissioner Roger Mowa Baeki Telly, strongly condemned these acts of violence, stressing that the rolling robot was installed with the aim of improving traffic and contributing to the development of the city.
Faced with this situation, the mayor called on the population to put an end to these barbaric acts and to work together to move the city forward rather than bringing it back to zero. He also recalled that the day before, the city had been paralyzed by a dead town day decreed by the pressure group “Veranda Mutshanga”, in protest against the irregularities noted during the recent elections.
The resumption of socio-economic activities in Butembo is therefore good news, testifying to the desire of the population to maintain the normal functioning of the city despite the tensions. However, it is important to remain vigilant and continue to seek peaceful and lasting solutions to the problems that arise, with the aim of promoting the development and well-being of the community.
