“This Body Works for Me: The series that breaks taboos around sex workers in South Africa”

Women in the adult entertainment industry in South Africa are often stigmatized and marginalized. However, the series This Body Works for Me seeks to change this perception by highlighting the lives of seven South African sex workers.

This series, broadcast on Showmax, follows these women in their daily lives, offering insight into their family relationships, their romantic relationships, their professional activities and the challenges they encounter. Whether online or in strip clubs, they show us the different facets of their work.

Thandeka, a 31-year-old sex worker, is a particular fan of this series. She herself works online and in Cape Town brothels and finds the series accurately represents the industry she has been in for 13 years. She even discusses it with her roommates who also have their favorite characters in the series.

Thandeka began her career as a sex worker at the age of 18, introduced by a “sugardaddy” who introduced her to men willing to pay for sex. Over time, she realized the problems sex workers face. Passionate about defending the rights of marginalized people, she became involved with activist groups like Sisonke and the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT) to fight for the decriminalization of sex work and ensure better protections for sex workers. Across the country.

This series helped change the public’s perception of sex work by showing the positive aspects of the profession, such as how sex workers help each other and achieve their goals despite their different personalities.

It is important to note that not all sex workers are victims of human trafficking or violence. These stereotypes often conveyed by the media contribute to their social exclusion. This Body Works for Me allows viewers to gain a better perspective on this often stigmatized industry and understand the challenges sex workers face on a daily basis.

The exact number of sex workers in South Africa is difficult to estimate due to their precarious legal status. In the city of Johannesburg alone, it is estimated that there are between 5,000 and 10,000 sex workers, engaged in different types of sex work, whether in brothels, on the streets or online.

Sex workers’ income varies depending on the services they provide, ranging from R500 to R10,000 for a service. They generally set their rates based on their own financial needs and the demands of their clients.

Sex workers, especially those who work on the streets, often face high risks such as arrest, abuse from clients and law enforcement, and even murder. That’s why they need support and solidarity within their community to protect each other and share customer information.

Unfortunately, sex workers face a lot of discrimination, including from law enforcement and the healthcare system. The prejudices and greed of some people can hinder their access to adequate medical care and fair justice.

This television series helps give a voice to these marginalized sex workers and change society’s perception of them. It highlights their humanity, their struggles and their aspirations, while defending their right to legal protection and fair social recognition.
