“The CENI confirms the holding of elections in the DRC in a tense climate: all the details on the progress of the polls on D-2”

The Rapporteur of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), Patricia Nseya, held a press briefing this Monday, December 18, 2023 to confirm the holding of the elections scheduled for December 20, 2023. In a climate of tensions and palpable expectations, the country is preparing to exercise its right to vote in the next 48 hours.

During this press conference, Patricia Nseya addressed several important subjects related to the organization of the polls. She notably took stock of the deployment of electoral materials, the end of the electoral campaign, electoral silence, polling day, the counting and publication of provisional results by the CENI.

Concerning the deployment of equipment, the CENI managed to transport all the necessary equipment to the voting sites in accordance with established procedures. This was achieved thanks to the support of the government and external partners, ensuring that everything is in place for the smooth running of the elections.

Patricia Nseya also recalled the importance of electoral silence, this period of reflection granted to voters before they make their choice. She called on all stakeholders to respect this period by removing posters of parties and candidates within a radius of 100 meters from voting centers.

As for the publication of provisional results, the CENI is the only entity authorized to do so in accordance with the electoral law. Patricia Nseya stressed that observation missions must respect the laws of the Republic and not disrupt the conduct of electoral operations. The final results will be published by the competent courts.

Finally, the CENI rapporteur launched an appeal to all Congolese to go to the polls on December 20 in peace and serenity. She expressed her confidence in the work accomplished by the management of the CENI and assured that everything is done to offer quality and transparent elections.

In conclusion, as the date of the elections fast approaches, the CENI is ready to organize these elections of capital importance for the Democratic Republic of Congo. The population is invited to exercise their right to vote and actively participate in the country’s democratic process.
