“Nigeria strengthens its fight against drug addiction by uniting the armed forces and the drug control agency”

Title: Strengthening synergy between the armed forces and the drug control agency to confront the scourge of drug addiction

Introduction :
In a new effort to combat drug addiction plaguing the country, the Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Gwabim Musa, announced that members of the armed forces are not immune from this scourge. During his visit to the headquarters of the National Drug and Related Crimes Agency (NDLEA), General Musa said drug testing will now be mandatory during the recruitment and training process of military personnel .

A strengthened partnership in the fight against drugs:
General Musa also promised to strengthen synergy between the armed forces and the NDLEA to combat drug abuse and trafficking in the country. The Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa, has highly commended the armed forces for their loyalty, sacrifice and hard work in ensuring the security of the country. He also thanked the military for their logistical support and training.

Drug addiction and crime:
Marwa pointed out that drug addiction is the root cause of many crimes in the country, with offenders often relying on drugs to facilitate their criminal activities. The NDLEA has therefore intensified its efforts to reduce access and availability of drugs, leading to the arrest of over 42,000 drug traffickers and the seizure of 7,500 tonnes of drugs in the last three years. In addition, 1,057 hectares of cannabis plantations were destroyed and 8,350 offenders were sentenced. The NDLEA also took charge of the rehabilitation of 29,400 drug users.

The need for a rehabilitation center:
In a move to improve the care of servicemen facing substance abuse problems, Marwa suggested the construction of a central rehabilitation center and the creation of rehabilitation facilities in existing military hospitals. General Musa promised to take the suggestion into consideration and welcomed the progress made by the NDLEA in its fight against drugs, saying it had improved Nigeria’s international perception.

Conclusion :
The strengthening of collaboration between the armed forces and the NDLEA in the fight against drugs demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to eliminating this scourge. By introducing mandatory drug testing for its recruits and actively supporting the NDLEA’s efforts, the military is sending a clear message that drug abuse will not be tolerated within its ranks. By tackling the root cause of crime, that is, drug abuse, Nigeria is taking a step in the right direction to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
