Zambia’s foreign policy under President Hichilema: a lack of foresight and coherence

Title: Zambia’s international relations under the presidency of Hakainde Hichilema: a critical analysis

Introduction :

Since the election of President Hakainde Hichilema in August 2021, Zambia’s foreign policy and international relations have experienced a period of turbulence. Unfortunately, President Hichilema’s inexperienced leadership has led to a loss of respect from the international community. In this article, we will examine the actions and positions of his government to understand the implications of his foreign policy.

Lack of vision and foresight:

Compared to Zambia’s past leaders, President Hichilema lacks vision and foresight. The founders of this country established the foundations of authentic sovereignty and enjoyed international respect thanks to their unwavering position and principles. They were able to gain respect on the world stage, despite the challenges of their time.

Zambia’s neutral positioning during the Cold War:

A prominent example is the neutral stance taken by Zambia’s first democratic President, Dr Kenneth Kaunda, during the Cold War. The latter chose not to support either the Western bloc (United States and Europe) or the Eastern bloc (Soviet Union and China). This asserted neutrality was a strategic decision that corresponded to the interests of the country at the time.

The historical relationship with the Soviet Union and China:

Unfortunately, President Hichilema seems to ignore the historical significance of Zambia’s relations with the Soviet Union as well as the People’s Republic of China. These two countries played a crucial role in training freedom fighters in Africa, providing training and offering material support during liberation struggles on the continent.

The rise of Russia and China:

Russia and China today have growing influence in Africa, from Bamako to Ouagadougou. In some countries, such as Mali and the Central African Republic, Russian troops have replaced French troops. This geopolitical development further complicates international relations and requires a strategic and competent approach.

The controversial decisions of the Hichilema government:

Unfortunately, the actions and positions taken by the Hichilema government do not reflect this understanding of geopolitical issues. For example, during the vote in the United Nations General Assembly on the resolution condemning Russia’s controversial referendums in Ukraine, Zambia voted in favor of the resolution. This goes against the history and past relations between Zambia and Russia.

Additionally, Zambia abstained from a UN General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, sparking international criticism.

Conclusion :

It is clear that Zambia’s foreign policy under President Hakainde Hichilema lacks foresight and coherence. The decisions made by the government lack historical and geopolitical understanding. It is essential that President Hichilema realizes the importance of international relations and adopts a more thoughtful and strategic approach to preserving Zambia’s status and respect on the world stage.
