“Postponement of elections in the DRC: a solution to avoid chaos or a threat to democracy?”

The postponement of general elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo: a solution envisaged to avoid chaos

For several weeks, the question of postponing general elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been debated. As the fateful date of December 20, 2023 approaches, many Congolese are wondering about the risks and challenges that this crucial deadline represents for the future of the country.

Independent observers warn that if the elections are held under current conditions, they could be the worst in the country’s history. Among the main problems raised, we find in particular the lack of organization and competence of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), as well as the maneuvers of those in power to stay in power.

Indeed, the establishment of the CENI management team has raised numerous criticisms, notably accusing its lack of experience and political neutrality. A few days before the elections, many logistical problems persist, such as the deployment of electoral kits and defective voter cards. These dysfunctions fuel distrust and suspicion within the Congolese population.

Faced with this tense context, some are calling for a postponement of the elections. According to them, the current period looks more like a renewal of support for the head of state than a real electoral campaign. A postponement would therefore make it possible to dissipate these ambiguities, guarantee a more transparent electoral process and prevent the chaos planned by certain individuals.

However, not everyone is in favor of this postponement. Some candidates, such as Moïse Katumbi, are determined to face the incumbent president, Félix Tshisekedi, in the combined polls scheduled for December 20. The latter managed to bring together alliances and forces around his candidacy, promising the resurrection of the Congo and positioning himself as a serious competitor.

However, other candidates have taken the matter to the Constitutional Court to challenge irregularities in the electoral process, raising the possibility of power sharing in the event of the elections being canceled.

In conclusion, the question of postponing general elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo divides opinion. While some see this as a solution to avoid chaotic elections, others believe that the elections must take place according to the planned schedule. Whatever decision is made, the future of the country remains uncertain and will largely depend on how the electoral process is conducted.
