The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently made an important decision regarding the political situation in Rivers State, Nigeria. Following the defection of 25 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP has decided to formally request the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to hold fresh elections to fill these holidays.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Communications Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the NWC said it took a close look at the situation of the party in Rivers State during its 580th meeting on December 13, 2023. The defection of the 25-member Rivers State Assembly of the PDP was one of the key topics of discussion.
According to the statement, the NWC took the following actions:
– Formally inform INEC of the vacancies created by the defection of the 25 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, in accordance with Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 ( as amended).
– Formally request INEC to hold fresh elections in the 25 constituencies in Rivers State where vacancies now exist following the defection of the 25 members.
– Direct the National Legal Adviser to take appropriate legal action to declare the seats of the 25 defecting members vacant and hold fresh elections in the 25 constituencies in Rivers State in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria of 1999 (as amended).
– Ensure that the PDP will take all necessary measures to protect the votes and mandates of the people of the 25 constituencies of Rivers State, ensuring that they are not misused.
This move by the PDP shows its willingness to respect democratic principles and protect the rights of voters in Rivers State. It is essential to put in place a fair and transparent electoral process to guarantee the adequate representation of citizens. The PDP is determined to defend democratic rights and ensure the equitable participation of all political actors.
It now remains to be seen how INEC will respond to the PDP’s demand and how elections will be conducted in constituencies in Rivers State. The outcome of these elections will play a crucial role in the political stability of the region and in the democratic representation of citizens.
The PDP will continue to carefully monitor developments and take all necessary measures to ensure that the will of the people is respected. Democracy is a fundamental principle that must be preserved and protected to ensure a just and equitable society. The PDP believes it is its duty to defend the rights of citizens and promote free and fair elections.
