RIP Frank Kokori: The Labour Party Pays Tribute to a True Champion of Democracy
It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Comrade Frank Kokori, former General Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG). The news of his death came as a rude shock to the Labour Party, as we reflect on his remarkable contributions to our democracy.
Comrade Kokori was an icon of the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. Alongside other comrades, he fought tirelessly for the actualisation of the June 12, 1993 mandate, which is widely acknowledged as the freest, fairest, and most competitive election in the history of our nation. It was an election that brought together people from every tribe to speak with one voice, marking a significant moment in Nigerian history.
However, Comrade Kokori’s dedication to the cause of democracy did not come without a price. He was hounded, incarcerated, and imprisoned by the military junta for his role in organizing nationwide strikes that crippled the oil industry. Despite the hardships he endured, he remained a symbol of the struggle, inspiring countless others to fight for their rights.
Comrade Kokori was also a founding member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a group that played a pivotal role in the struggle for democracy in Nigeria. He actively participated in pro-democracy activities, organizing rallies and demonstrations to push for change.
It is disappointing to note that the past administration under President Muhammadu Buhari attempted to discredit and undermine Comrade Kokori, even though they benefited from his efforts to bring about democracy in our country. The government offered him a position but never followed through with his appointment, leaving him in a state of limbo. This lack of support from those who benefited from his sacrifices is truly disheartening.
Comrade Kokori’s passion for democracy and his commitment to the betterment of Nigeria will always be remembered. He fought tirelessly to eradicate poverty, hunger, and unemployment. He envisioned a Nigeria where the institutions work for the people, rather than the interests of the ruling class. As we pay tribute to him, it is important that we carry forward his legacy and work towards the Nigeria he dreamt of.
The Labour Party will deeply miss Comrade Frank Kokori, an outstanding leader who fought relentlessly for the rights of Nigerian workers and the welfare of the people. His union, NUPENG, was one of the strongest and played a crucial role in the broader labour movement. We will honor his memory by continuing to advocate for a Nigeria that works for the masses, where poverty, hunger, and unemployment are actively addressed.
While Comrade Kokori may no longer be with us, his legacy will forever remain in our hearts and minds. We owe it to him to carry his torch of democracy, justice, and equality. Let us strive to build a Nigeria that he would be proud of, a Nigeria that upholds the values he fought so passionately for.
Rest in peace, Comrade Frank Kokori. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
