Women’s CAN 2024: Discover the qualified teams and the favorites for the tournament!

The qualifiers for the 2024 women’s CAN ended with the final round, revealing the 11 teams who will travel to Morocco for the 15th edition of the competition. Among the qualified nations, we find the current title holder, South Africa, as well as the DR Congo which will make its return after 24 years of absence.

Although some final round second legs were inconclusive, teams such as South Africa faced tense moments after a tight first leg against Burkina Faso. However, Banyana Banyana managed to take the lead in the 56th minute of the second leg thanks to a converted penalty by Nicole Michael, thus securing their qualification for the competition.

Nigeria and Zambia, semi-finalists of the women’s CAN in 2022, also impressed during the qualifiers. The Super Falcons crushed Cape Verde 5-0 in the first leg, while the Zambians dominated Angola 6-0. Both teams confirmed their superiority during the return matches, easily qualifying for the competition.

Mali also showed their talent by winning against Guinea in both matches, posting an aggregate score of 10-2 in their favor. For their part, the Senegalese ensured their qualification by eliminating Egypt, conceding no goals in both matches.

One of the surprises of these qualifiers is undoubtedly the DR Congo. The Leopards managed to eliminate Equatorial Guinea, the two-time reigning African champion, by winning the second leg 2-1 after a draw in the first leg. This qualification marks a memorable return for DR Congo, which has not participated in the women’s CAN since 1998.

In total, the twelve countries qualified for the 2024 women’s CAN are: Morocco (as organizing country), South Africa, Algeria, Botswana, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria, DR Congo, Senegal, Tanzania, Tunisia and Zambia.

The qualified teams therefore successfully completed the 2024 Women’s CAN qualifiers, demonstrating their dominance and determination to carve out a place on the continental scene. The competition promises to be exciting and we can’t wait to see these teams compete for the title of African champions.
