The power of trees in the fight against climate change
Trees play a vital role in preserving our environment and combating climate change. This is why around forty members of civil society and local authorities in the territory of Beni, in the province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, were made aware of the importance of the tree during an organized event. by the Eagles Foundation for the Support of the Vulnerable (FAEVU) and Oicha University.
The objective of this awareness raising was to encourage participants to integrate the environmental aspect into their humanitarian interventions. Neville Mumbere, FAEVU program manager, emphasizes that humanitarian interventions often have harmful consequences on the environment, without appropriate assessment or compensation. It is therefore essential to raise awareness among organizations and encourage them to develop policies and strategies that integrate environmental preservation.
The beneficial role of trees in the fight against climate change is undeniable. They capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, one of the main gases responsible for global warming, and store it in their biomass. Additionally, trees provide shade, reduce water evaporation, regulate the water cycle, and protect soils from erosion.
