“Bac de Luozi: New engines for safe crossings on the Congo River”

Title: The Luozi ferry is equipped with new engines to ensure safe crossings

Introduction :

The Luozi ferry, linking the territories of Songololo and Luozi in the Kongo Central province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, recently saw the installation of new engines. After numerous requests from the local population, the authorities finally took measures to resolve the recurring problem of this floating device. In this article we will look at the implementation of these new engines and the improvements they will bring to the crossing of the Congo River.

New engines for the Luozi ferry:

After being received in Matadi, the two new engines intended for the Luozi ferry were finally installed on Monday December 4. This follows a wait of more than a month since their arrival. Although the population of Luozi expressed the wish to obtain a new large-tonnage ferry engine, the authorities opted for the solution of replacing the existing engines. Although they are different brands from the old failed motors, these new motors offer improved reliability and efficiency.

Improvement of river traffic between Songololo and Luozi:

The Luozi ferry is an important means of transport for people and vehicles, connecting the two banks of the Congo River. Although the new engines bring a significant improvement, the old Luozi ferry, in service since 1997, still presents problems linked to its dilapidated state. With a capacity of 35 tonnes, this floating machine has often been the victim of recurring breakdowns. In addition, its damaged hull regularly lets water in, creating a risk of sinking.

Additional measures to ensure safe crossings:

As part of the improvements made to the Luozi ferry, one of the old defective engines was brought back to Kinshasa, while the second will be used as a backup engine in the Mpioka ferry, also based in Luozi. This decision will ensure a backup plan if necessary, knowing that the Mpioka ferry is no longer operational. However, it is important to note that these measures do not completely resolve the problems with Luozi’s old bin, which will eventually require more extensive repairs or complete replacement.

Conclusion :

The installation of the new engines in the Luozi ferry is a positive step towards improving river traffic between Songololo and Luozi. Although measures have been taken to ensure safe crossings, there are still challenges ahead in terms of maintenance and modernization of the floating craft. Authorities must continue to work on sustainable solutions to ensure safe and efficient transport for local people.
