UAE commits to establishing humanitarian response stations in Nigeria to combat climate crises and poverty.

The Federal Government of Nigeria recently entered into an agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to establish humanitarian response stations across the country to provide rapid and effective assistance to disaster victims. The announcement was made by Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, during a press conference in Dubai, UAE, following her meetings with Emirati government officials during the Conference United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28).

Nigeria has sought help from the United Arab Emirates to address the humanitarian crises caused by the insurgency, particularly in the country’s northeast, as well as to end endemic poverty in other regions. The minister explained that the UAE Red Crescent, the equivalent of the Red Cross, is now ready to establish a more resilient humanitarian response system across the country.

At COP28, the role of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Fight against Poverty was to find ways to adapt to climate change, to obtain support to create jobs and lift people out of poverty, align with the Paris Agreement and prevent and mitigate natural disasters that plunge people into humanitarian crises.

The ministry is aware that climate change is the root cause of many humanitarian crises and poverty plaguing most parts of Nigeria. The country’s regular floods are a result of climate change, as is the shrinking of the Lake Chad basin and the Sahel, leading to the loss of livelihoods of more than 40 million people. This situation makes populations vulnerable to poverty and facilitates recruitment by terrorist organizations.

The Federal Government of Nigeria is also aware that developed countries are responsible for most greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change and its adverse consequences.

In conclusion, the establishment of humanitarian response stations by the UAE in Nigeria constitutes a significant step forward in responding to humanitarian crises caused by climate change. This collaboration will make it possible to support the population and fight poverty more effectively.. It is essential that developed countries assume their responsibility in the fight against climate change and its consequences, in order to prevent future humanitarian crises.
