The story of Taiwo Kayode Alli, a 75-year-old businessman, and his son Hamid Alli, is a disturbing example of intimidation and invasion of privacy by a government agency. The two men recently filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Lagos, alleging that the chairman of the National Drug Enforcement Agency and four others intimidated and molested their family by invading their home.
In their application, filed by their lawyer Eyitayo Abiodun, they ask the court to grant them an order restraining the defendants from arresting, intimidating or molesting them, until their application is heard. The respondents include the Chairman of the National Drug Enforcement Agency, the head of the Lagos Regional Command of the Agency, a member of the Agency based in Bariga and a person named Adekunle Edward.
The plaintiffs allege that their home was attacked on June 6, 2023, when Taiwo Kayode Alli’s son drove a friend to the airport and returned home to find the door had been forced open and his brother’s car had disappeared. They immediately reported the incident to the police, who found the car in front of an office of the National Drug Control Agency. The agency allegedly claimed that the car was abandoned by a person refusing to comply with a check, although the car was parked at the Alli’s house. Agency agents then emptied the house and ransacked the apartment of the other brother, who was abroad.
The plaintiffs also claim that the Agency demanded a payment of 5.5 million naira (approximately 11,000 euros) to return the confiscated documents and personal effects. They denounce these acts as a blatant violation of their constitutional rights to privacy, liberty and dignity.
The court has fixed the hearing of the application for December 4, 2023, and the plaintiffs are seeking compensation of N50 million for the loss suffered.
This case highlights the problems of respect for fundamental rights and the excessive influence of government agencies. It highlights the importance of ensuring legal and fair procedures for all citizens, regardless of their status or social position. It is crucial to protect the privacy of individuals and ensure that everyone is treated fairly in court.
As a society, we must demand accountability and transparency from our government institutions and ensure that the fundamental rights of all citizens are respected. Alli’s case is a powerful reminder that no one should be bullied or mistreated, whether by government agencies or other individuals. Defending human rights and promoting access to justice must be part of our core values as a society.
