In our current society, where young people are exposed to many temptations and negative influences, the role of parents in monitoring their children and combating social vices is more important than ever. Aisha Babangida, Chairperson of the African Rural Women’s Welfare Program and other relevant stakeholders, recently called on parents to be more vigilant and take steps to prevent these problems.
At the 11th annual Al-Habibiyyah Women’s Forum, which had the theme “The Role of Parents in Combating Social Vices”, Aisha Babangida expressed concern over the alarming rise in social vices, especially drug abuse among young people.
She therefore called for collective mobilization to counter this scourge. According to her, “charity begins at home”, and as mothers and parents it is essential to be attentive, to observe and monitor our children, to talk to them and guide them against these vices. She also highlighted the importance of home education by supporting and properly educating our children to guard them against these vices.
Hajia Fatima Abiola-Popoola, Deputy Director of Outreach at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), also stressed the crucial role of parental education in combating vices in society. According to her, the style of education adopted by parents determines the kind of children who will be raised and influenced by society.
Sheikh Fuad Adeyemi, Chief Imam of the Islamic Society of Al-Habibiyyah, stressed that this program aims to address contemporary challenges in society. He called on parents, society and concerned government agencies to work in synergy to counter rising social vices in the country.
It is undeniable that parents have a vital role to play in the protection and education of their children to prevent social vices. It starts with careful monitoring, open and honest communication, and preventative education about the dangers and consequences of these deviant behaviors.
However, it is also important that society as a whole supports these efforts by providing resources and effective awareness programs in schools and communities. Only by working together can we truly tackle this serious problem and provide a better future for our children.
In conclusion, it is time for parents to realize their crucial role in preventing social vices in their children. With vigilance, love and support, we can help create a healthier and stronger society for future generations. Together we can make a difference.
