“The importance of adapting your humor: AY apologizes after controversial joke about Davido”

The world of stand-up comedy is often synonymous with spicy jokes and teasing between friends. However, sometimes these jokes aren’t to everyone’s taste, and that’s exactly what happened to AY on his tour.

During an interview on media personality Toke Makinwa’s Toke Moments podcast, AY explained that the joke he made on stage about Davido earned him a lot of criticism once he returned to Nigeria, although the Nigerians in the diaspora have not had a problem with this one. He nevertheless admitted that the joke had lost its impact upon his return to the country.

“I went on tour and made a joke about Davido, it was one of the funniest on our show, but when she arrived in the country, she was already overwhelmed. At the time, she was part of the trend and people could relate to it, so it had some meaning. I’m human and my timing was off when the joke came out,” he said.

In fact, during a tour stop in Warri, AY joked about Davido having children with different women thanks to his “little contraption”, while he himself struggled for 13 years to conceive with his own wife. This joke did not go down well with Nigerian netizens, and after the video went viral on social media, the comedian had to apologize. Davido, on the other hand, had no problem with the joke and made it clear in AY’s comments.

Continuing his story with Makinwa, AY said: “I was there, happy to see that ‘this joke is well received’ and David is my guy, if it wasn’t because he came to my page and said ‘Baba, nothing is spoiled’, he likes jokes, but his fan base doesn’t tolerate it.”

This story highlights the importance of knowing how to adapt your humor and taking into account the impact of your jokes, particularly when they affect public figures. The comic force of a joke can vary depending on the context, and it is essential to consider the sensitivities of the audience to avoid offending anyone.

As a comedian, it’s essential to balance being bold with your jokes and respecting boundaries to ensure a fun and enjoyable experience for everyone. It’s a lesson that AY was able to learn through this situation, and one that reminds all comedians of the importance of taking a step back and thinking about the impact of their words.
