The attack on the residence of the INEC commissioner in Kogi: an attempt at destabilization
On Friday night, the residence of the Kogi State INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission) commissioner was the target of an attack. According to the state’s police commissioner, Mr. Bethrand Onuoha, the attackers attempted to enter the residence at around 3:00 a.m., but encountered stiff resistance from security forces.
This attack was described as “very regrettable and nasty” by the police commissioner. Fortunately, the security forces present on site managed to repel the attackers and set fire to the vehicle they had used in the attack.
Since then, soldiers have been deployed to ensure security at the residence, as well as police monitoring the surrounding area to prevent any further attempts.
Both the All Progressives Congress (APC) political party in Kogi State and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) condemned the attack but blamed each other for it.
The SDP called for an immediate investigation to identify those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice, while the APC blamed the SDP and called for the immediate arrest of its gubernatorial candidate, Mr. Muritala Ajaka, for his alleged involvement in the attack.
Mr. Kingsley Fanwo, spokesperson for the APC Campaign Council, told a press conference that in addition to the residence of the INEC commissioner, there were also attempts to attack against the government palace and party headquarters.
He accused the SDP of desperately seeking to cover up their misdeeds in the Kogi East region during the recent government elections, as well as corrupting INEC documents that could be used in the electoral tribunal.
Fanwo urged the police, the Department of State Security and other security forces to put an end to this spiral into anarchy by immediately arresting Ajaka and his supporters on suspicion of masterminding the attack. against the residence of the INEC commissioner.
On its part, the SDP, through its Media Director, condemned this “assassination attempt” on the INEC commissioner and accused thugs loyal to the state government of being responsible for this attack.
It is essential that those involved in this attack on the INEC commissioner are held accountable for their actions in a democratic society.
