“The rise in prices of basic necessities in Mbuji-Mayi is putting households in financial difficulty”

Residents of Mbuji-Mayi are facing an increase in the prices of basic necessities. Since the start of the week, the prices of corn and sugar have increased considerably, putting a strain on household budgets. A scoop of corn that previously sold for 6,000 Congolese Francs is now sold for 10,000 or even 12,000 Congolese Francs. Likewise, the price of a glass of sugar increased from 700 to 1200 Congolese francs.

According to Dominique Ilunga, provincial director of Entreprises du Congo (FEC), this increase in prices is the result of several factors. First of all, the difficulties in transporting products to the town of Mbuji-Mayi have led to an increase in transport costs, which has an impact on sales prices. Additionally, some speculation also took place in view of the end-of-year festivities, which contributed to this price increase.

This increase in the prices of basic necessities has a direct impact on the household basket in Mbuji-Mayi. Residents find themselves facing higher expenses for essential foods, which can put low-income households in difficulty. It is therefore important that measures are taken to ensure affordable access to these essential products.

In conclusion, the increase in prices of basic necessities in Mbuji-Mayi is a major concern for the city’s residents. It is crucial to find solutions to ensure a regular and affordable supply of these products, in order to preserve the purchasing power of households and guarantee their economic well-being.
