“The protection of the rights of indigenous peoples in the DRC: progress and commitments during a historic conference”

The protection of the rights of indigenous peoples in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continues to attract the attention of local and international actors. In this context, the UNJHRO, the Network of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities for Forest Ecosystems (REPALEF), Internews and the Ministry of Human Rights recently advocated for the implementation of the law protecting pygmies.

During a conference held in Kinshasa, these organizations examined the progress and obstacles encountered in the implementation of this law, adopted last year. The UNJHRO highlighted the importance of this electoral period to fully integrate indigenous communities and encouraged participants to find effective strategies in this regard.

REPALEF, as the main beneficiary of advocacy for the promotion of the rights of indigenous peoples, insisted on the need to popularize this law among the entire population. He recalled that each individual should consider indigenous people as their brothers and sisters, and get involved collectively so that their rights are fully respected in the DRC.

The Ministry of Human Rights also affirmed its commitment to effectively support the implementation of the law protecting the rights of indigenous populations. He thus reassured local communities and indigenous peoples of his availability to act in their favor.

This conference demonstrates the importance given to protecting the rights of indigenous peoples in the DRC. The implementation of this law is essential to ensure their development and allow them to fully enjoy their rights recognized by the legislation. It is now essential to put in place concrete actions and raise awareness of this issue throughout society, in order to promote better inclusion of indigenous communities in the country.
