The power of youth participation in the 2024 government elections
As part of a national recruitment roadshow, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) is celebrating the successful conclusion of its second cohort of the National Youth Service (NYS) programme. This roadshow began in Brits, North West, where CLLR Douglas Maimane, Executive Mayor of Madibeng Local Municipality, hosted the program and encouraged the youth of Madibeng to seize the opportunities presented to them. He urged them to embrace these opportunities as a symbol of empowerment, emphasizing the importance of young people taking charge of their development and contributing positively to their community.
The roadshow then traveled to the De Aar Multipurpose Center in the Northern Cape, followed by the Thaba Nchu Civic Center in the Free State, and finally the Jakes Gerwel Multipurpose Center in Somerset East, Northern Cape. ‘Eastern Cape. The final stop in Somerset East saw a keynote address from the Executive Mayor of the Blue Crane Route Municipality, CLLR Bonisile Manxoweni, who reaffirmed the local leadership’s commitment to supporting youth development initiatives. Present were representatives from the Department of Home Affairs, Enterprise Unlimited, Department of Social Development, Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Small Business Finance Agency (SEFA) and SA Youth, all of whom contributed to the success of the roadshow.
NYDA board member Pearl Pillay graced the Somerset East meeting and praised young people for their willingness to embrace change. She stressed that their presence is proof of their determination to improve their lives. Pillay further encouraged young people to actively advocate for their advancement by participating in the upcoming 2024 government elections, highlighting the power of voting to influence policies that directly impact the lives of young people.
As the recruitment phase of the NYS program concludes, NYDA remains firmly committed to providing a platform for young people to access information, opportunities and inspiration to shape their destinies.
