A metal bridge damaged by heavy rains in Kalima-Benge, in the Uvira territory of South Kivu, required the intervention of the Roads Office for its repair. The assembly work began on Monday, November 27 and will be supervised by engineer Deo Ngongo of the public company. The aim is to restore traffic quickly and efficiently by repairing the bridge to allow traffic between the public port of Kalundu and the rest of Uvira town.
According to engineer Deo Ngongo, the bridge has a specific assembly pattern that will facilitate the work. Thanks to this availability, it is possible to restore traffic in a shorter period of time, thus avoiding the implementation of a diversion which would have required more time and resources. The Roads Office team is determined to complete the work within a maximum of one week.
However, working conditions are difficult, with traffic jams making the task complicated. During the day, the team strives to guide passers-by while the majority of work is carried out at night when traffic is less dense.
Once the work is completed, a sign will be installed to indicate the authorized weight limit, which will be a maximum of 200 tonnes. This will prevent any risk of overloading which could re-damage the metal bridge.
This is an important intervention by the Roads Authority to ensure traffic flow and maintain economic activities between Kalundu Port and Uvira Town. This type of intervention demonstrates the importance of road infrastructure in the development of a region and the need for their regular maintenance to guarantee the safety of users.
In conclusion, the assembly work on the damaged metal bridge in Kalima-Benge is underway under the supervision of the Roads Office. The objective is to quickly restore traffic between the port of Kalundu and the town of Uvira. Despite the difficult working conditions, the team is determined to complete the work within a week. Once repaired, the bridge will have a permitted weight limit of 200 tonnes to ensure its durability.
