The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has enormous potential to become a leading country in the fight against climate change. With its vast forests, fresh water resources and mineral reserves, the country has the capacity to contribute to global climate action while generating revenue to strengthen its resilience and sustainable growth.
However, according to a new World Bank report, the DRC must strengthen its institutions and increase investments to achieve its ambitious climate goals. The report highlights the devastating effects of climate change on the country, with a possible loss of 4.7% to 12.9% of GDP by 2050 if no action is taken.
The report also highlights the importance of the DRC’s forests, which can generate an estimated value of between $223 billion and $398 billion per year through carbon storage and ecosystem services. However, if these forests are not protected, the loss of 40% of their current extent could have disastrous consequences, both environmentally and economically.
To realize its potential as a climate change solution country, the DRC must therefore invest in strong and resilient institutions capable of coping with conflict and increased fragility. Additionally, substantial investments are needed to implement climate resilient measures and inclusive policies, to ensure sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction.
World Bank Country Director Albert Zeufack emphasizes that the DRC has the opportunity to become the leading solution country in Africa and beyond, thanks to its natural resources and hydroelectric capacity. However, he emphasizes the need to strengthen the country’s institutions, tackle climate risks and pursue sustainable, low-carbon and diversified growth.
