“The increased sentences for rape on appeal in Morocco: a step towards justice?”

Penalties for rape increased on appeal in Morocco: a step towards justice?

Moroccan justice recently delivered a verdict that attracted the attention of public opinion and human rights defenders. Indeed, on appeal, the sentences of four men accused of raping a teenage girl were increased to four years in prison, compared to only one year at first instance. This decision was hailed as a step towards justice, after accusations of laxity.

The facts date back to 2021, in a village near the town of Tata, in the southeast of Morocco. A 15-year-old girl was the victim of a violent indecent assault. At first instance, the defendants received a sentence considered too lenient by many human rights associations and public opinion.

Faced with the controversy aroused by this verdict, the Agadir Court of Appeal decided to increase the sentences. From now on, the culprits will have to serve four years in prison for their crime. Although this verdict may still be considered insufficient, some perceive it as a step forward from the initial decision.

This case is unfortunately not an isolated case in Morocco. Last March, another scandal broke out when three men were sentenced to just two years in prison for the rape of an 11-year-old girl. This decision sparked strong indignation and mobilization from civil society to demand harsher sentences. Faced with this pressure, the sentences were reassessed in April and increased to 10 and 20 years in prison.

These cases highlight the need for reform of the penal system to ensure fairer and more deterrent justice for sexual crimes. Moroccan rights defenders are calling for much harsher penalties to protect victims and deter perpetrators of such acts.

It is important to remember that the fight against sexual violence is not limited to harsher penalties, but also requires awareness-raising and education in society to change mentalities and promote respect for the rights of women and children.

In conclusion, the increased sentences on appeal in the case of the rape of a teenager in Morocco mark progress towards fairer justice. However, much work remains to be done to establish an adequate penal system capable of severely punishing sexual crimes and protecting victims. The mobilization of civil society and societal actors is crucial to continue to put pressure on the authorities and work towards a fairer and safer society for all..
